Weather Integration

Give your Aura access to real-time weather data for forecasts, alerts, and contextual messages.

Last updated: December 2024

Overview

Weather is one of the most universally useful senses for your Aura. With weather data, your Aura can:

  • Include current conditions and forecasts in morning briefings
  • Alert you when rain is expected before you leave
  • Suggest appropriate clothing based on temperature
  • Warn about severe weather conditions
  • Adjust recommendations based on UV index or air quality

Weather is a built-in sense that doesn't require connecting an external account - it just needs to know your location.

Enabling Weather

Weather is automatically available when Aura knows your location. There are two ways to set your location:

  1. Enable location sharing: Weather will automatically use your current location
  2. Set a manual location: In Settings, specify a city or address for weather data

Location sharing provides the most accurate weather (based on where you actually are), while a manual location is useful if you don't want to share your real-time position.

Tip
If you travel frequently, location sharing ensures weather data matches your current city. If you mostly stay in one area, a manual location works just as well.

Available Weather Data

Your Aura has access to comprehensive weather information:

Current Conditions

  • Temperature: Current temp and "feels like" temperature
  • Conditions: Clear, cloudy, rainy, snowy, etc.
  • Humidity: Current relative humidity percentage
  • Wind: Speed and direction
  • UV Index: Sun exposure risk level
  • Air Quality: AQI and pollutant levels (where available)

Forecasts

  • Hourly forecast: Conditions for the next 24+ hours
  • Daily forecast: High/low temps and conditions for the next 7 days
  • Precipitation probability: Chance of rain/snow at different times
  • Sunrise/sunset: Daylight hours for your location

Weather Alerts

  • Severe weather warnings: Storms, tornadoes, hurricanes
  • Heat/cold advisories: Extreme temperature warnings
  • Air quality alerts: When AQI reaches unhealthy levels
  • Winter weather: Snow, ice, freezing rain warnings

Weather in Rules

Weather data can be used as both triggers and conditions in behavior rules.

Weather Triggers

Fire rules when weather conditions change:

TriggerExample Use
Rain expected"Rain starts within 2 hours" → Umbrella reminder
Temperature drop"Temp drops 15°+ from yesterday" → Dress warmer
Severe alert issuedNew weather warning → Immediate notification
UV index high"UV exceeds 7" → Sunscreen reminder

Weather Conditions

Add weather as a condition to make other rules context-aware:

  • "Only if raining" — Morning briefing emphasizes weather when it's bad
  • "Temperature below 40°F" — Remind to grab a warm coat
  • "UV index above 5" — Outdoor activity rule includes sun protection tip
  • "No precipitation expected" — Suggest outdoor activities
Note
Combining weather conditions with time-based triggers creates smart, contextual messages. A 7 AM rule with "if raining" only mentions weather when it's actually relevant.

Example Rules

Commute Weather Check

Trigger7:00 AM weekdays
ConditionRain probability > 30% OR temperature < 50°F
Message"Brief me on today's weather, focusing on my commute times (8 AM and 5 PM)"

UV Protection Reminder

Trigger10:00 AM daily
ConditionUV index ≥ 7
Message"Remind me about sun protection if I'm going outside today"

Rain Alert

TriggerRain expected within 2 hours
ConditionBetween 7 AM and 8 PM (daytime only)
Message"Give me a heads up about incoming rain and how long it's expected to last"

Severe Weather Alert

TriggerSevere weather alert issued
ConditionNone (always fire)
Message"Alert me to the severe weather warning and what precautions I should take"

Temperature Units

You can choose between Fahrenheit and Celsius in your settings:

  1. Go to Settings → Preferences
  2. Find Temperature Unit
  3. Select Fahrenheit (°F) or Celsius (°C)

This affects how your Aura references temperatures in messages and how conditions are displayed in the rule builder.

Location Source

Weather data is fetched based on your location:

  • Automatic (location sharing enabled): Weather updates as you move between cities
  • Manual location: Weather always shows data for your set location

If you're traveling and have location sharing enabled, your Aura automatically uses weather for your current city. This is great for travel but might be confusing if you want consistent home-city weather.

Tip
Travelers: Enable location sharing for automatic weather wherever you go. Stay-at-home workers: A manual location might be simpler if you rarely travel.

Troubleshooting

Weather data not appearing

  • Check that location is enabled (either sharing or manual)
  • Verify your location is valid (search works for the address/city)
  • Weather APIs occasionally have delays - wait a few minutes and refresh

Weather seems wrong for my location

  • If using location sharing, check that your position is accurate
  • Weather stations have limited coverage - data may be from a nearby city
  • Try setting a manual location for your specific city

Rain alert didn't fire

  • Check that the rule is enabled
  • Rain probability might not have reached your configured threshold
  • Review rule history to see if conditions were evaluated

Temperature in wrong units

  • Go to Settings → Preferences and verify your temperature unit setting
  • Reload the app after changing the setting
Note
Weather data is updated frequently but not in real-time. Conditions typically refresh every 15-30 minutes. For the most current conditions, your Aura fetches fresh data when composing a message.
