Notification Channels

Learn how to configure notification channels including in-app, email, SMS, and WhatsApp for your Aura communications.

Last updated: January 2025

Overview

Notification channels are how your Aura communicates with you. Whether it's a proactive check-in, a reminder, or a response to a rule trigger, you control where and how these messages are delivered.

Each channel has its own strengths: in-app for real-time alerts, email for detailed messages, SMS for urgent notifications, and WhatsApp for rich conversational interactions.

Available Channels

Aura supports multiple notification channels, with availability depending on your subscription plan.

In-App Notifications

Available on: All plans

In-app notifications appear directly in the Aura mobile app and web dashboard. When your Aura has something to share, you'll see:

  • Push notifications on your mobile device
  • A notification badge in the app
  • Messages in your Aura's chat interface

This is the default channel and is always enabled. It's perfect for quick check-ins and real-time communication.

Email Notifications

Available on: Personal, Family, and Business plans

Email notifications deliver Aura messages to your inbox. These are great for:

  • Longer, more detailed messages
  • Daily or weekly summaries
  • Non-urgent information you can review later
  • Messages you want to search or reference

Emails are sent from [email protected]. Add this address to your contacts to ensure delivery.

SMS Text Messages

Available on: Personal, Family, and Business plans

SMS delivers short text messages directly to your phone. Best for:

  • Urgent or time-sensitive notifications
  • Quick reminders that need immediate attention
  • When you might not have the app open
Note
SMS usage may be limited based on your plan. Check the Limits tab in Settings to see your monthly SMS allowance.

WhatsApp Messages

Available on: Family and Business plans

WhatsApp provides rich messaging with full conversation support:

  • Two-way conversations - reply directly to your Aura
  • Rich media support (images, links, formatted text)
  • Message history in your WhatsApp chat
  • Familiar interface for natural conversation

WhatsApp is the most interactive channel, allowing you to have ongoing conversations with your Aura directly in the WhatsApp app.

Setting Up Channels

Configure your notification channels in Settings to start receiving messages.

Email Setup

Email notifications use your account's registered email address by default.

  1. Go to Settings → Notifications
  2. Find the Email section
  3. Toggle Enable Email Notifications
  4. Optionally, add an alternate email address
  5. Click Save

You'll receive a test email to confirm everything is working.

Tip
Check your spam folder if you don't see the test email. Mark it as "not spam" to ensure future messages arrive in your inbox.

SMS Setup

SMS requires verifying your phone number before you can receive messages.

  1. Go to Settings → Notifications
  2. Find the SMS section
  3. Enter your phone number with country code (e.g., +1 for US)
  4. Click Send Verification Code
  5. Enter the 6-digit code you receive
  6. Toggle Enable SMS Notifications
Note
Standard message rates may apply from your carrier. Aura doesn't charge extra for SMS beyond any plan limits.

WhatsApp Setup

Link your WhatsApp account to receive messages and have conversations.

  1. Go to Settings → Notifications
  2. Find the WhatsApp section
  3. Click Link WhatsApp Account
  4. You'll see a QR code - scan it with WhatsApp on your phone
  5. Or click to open WhatsApp Web and approve the connection
  6. Once linked, toggle Enable WhatsApp Notifications

After linking, your Aura will appear as a contact in WhatsApp. You can start conversations from either the Aura app or directly in WhatsApp.

Per-Aura Channel Settings

Beyond account-level settings, you can configure which channels each Aura uses. This lets you customize how different Auras reach you.

For example:

  • Your Work Aura sends emails for daily briefings
  • Your Wellness Aura uses SMS for workout reminders
  • Your Personal Aura uses in-app for casual check-ins

To configure per-Aura channels:

  1. Go to your Aura's settings (click the gear icon on the Aura card)
  2. Select the Channels tab
  3. Toggle each channel on or off for that Aura
  4. Set a preferred channel for that Aura's messages
  5. Click Save
Tip
The preferred channel is used first. If it fails (e.g., you're offline for push notifications), Aura falls back to other enabled channels.

Channel Priority & Fallbacks

When a message needs to be delivered, Aura follows this priority order:

  1. Aura's Preferred Channel (if set)
  2. In-App Notifications (always attempted)
  3. Email (if enabled)
  4. SMS (if enabled and within limits)
  5. WhatsApp (if enabled and linked)

If the primary channel fails (e.g., push notification couldn't be delivered), Aura will try the next enabled channel to ensure you receive the message.

You can also configure behavior rules to use specific channels:

  • "When I have a meeting in 15 minutes, send an SMS"
  • "Every Sunday at 8 PM, send weekly summary via Email"

Usage & Plan Limits

Different channels have different limits based on your subscription plan:

Email-UnlimitedUnlimitedUnlimited
SMS-100/mo500/moCustom

Note
In-app message limits count against your overall monthly message quota. Email, SMS, and WhatsApp have their own separate limits where applicable.
