Notifications

Configure push notifications so your Aura can reach you even when the app isn't open.

Last updated: December 2024

Overview

When your Aura's rules fire, it needs a way to reach you. Notifications are the delivery mechanism that ensures you receive proactive messages even when you're not actively using the app.

This guide explains the different notification types, how to enable them, and how to configure them for the best experience.

Notification Types

In-App Messages

Every message from your Aura appears in the conversation view within the app. These are always available and don't require any special setup.

  • Messages are stored and accessible anytime you open the app
  • You can scroll back through your conversation history
  • No additional permissions required

Limitation: You won't know a new message arrived unless you open the app to check.

Push Notifications

Push notifications alert you on your device when your Aura sends a message. They work even when:

  • The app is closed
  • Your device is locked
  • You're using other apps

Benefits: You'll never miss a proactive message from your Aura.

Tip
Push notifications are essential for time-sensitive rules like morning briefings or arrival-based reminders. Without them, you'd need to remember to open the app.

Enabling Push Notifications

Push notifications require permission from both your browser (or app) and your device's operating system.

In Your Browser

  1. Open Aura in your web browser
  2. Go to Settings → Notifications
  3. Click Enable Push Notifications
  4. Your browser will show a permission prompt - click Allow
  5. You should see a confirmation that notifications are enabled

If you accidentally clicked "Block":

  • Chrome: Click the lock icon in the address bar → Site settings → Notifications → Allow
  • Firefox: Click the lock icon → Clear permission for notifications → Reload and allow
  • Safari: Safari → Settings → Websites → Notifications → Find Aura and allow

On Mobile Devices

If you're using Aura as a Progressive Web App (PWA) or the native app:

iOS:

  1. Make sure Aura is added to your Home Screen (Safari → Share → Add to Home Screen)
  2. Open the app from your Home Screen
  3. Go to Settings → Notifications and tap Enable
  4. Allow notifications when prompted
  5. Also check: iPhone Settings → Notifications → Aura → Allow Notifications
Warning
iOS web push notifications require iOS 16.4 or later and the app must be added to your Home Screen. Safari alone doesn't support web push on iOS.

Android:

  1. Open Aura in Chrome (or your default browser)
  2. When prompted to add to Home Screen, accept (recommended)
  3. Go to Settings → Notifications and enable push
  4. Allow when the permission prompt appears

Configuring Per Aura

You can control which Auras can send push notifications:

  1. Go to My Auras and select the Aura you want to configure
  2. Scroll to Channels or Notification Settings
  3. Toggle Push Notifications on or off for this Aura

This is useful if you have multiple Auras with different urgency levels:

  • Morning briefing Aura: Enable push to wake up with the notification
  • Casual companion Aura: Maybe only in-app is needed
  • Work assistant Aura: Push during work hours, muted after

Notification Settings

Fine-tune your notification experience in Settings → Notifications.

Quiet Hours

Set times when push notifications are silenced:

  • Enable Quiet Hours: Toggle on to activate
  • Start Time: When quiet hours begin (e.g., 10:00 PM)
  • End Time: When quiet hours end (e.g., 7:00 AM)

During quiet hours, your Auras will still send messages, but they won't trigger push notifications. You'll see them when you open the app.

Note
Quiet Hours respect your timezone settings. Make sure your timezone is configured correctly in Settings → Account.

Notification Frequency

Optionally limit how often you receive push notifications:

  • No limit: Every proactive message triggers a push
  • Batched: Group notifications and send at most every X minutes
  • Daily digest: Receive a summary once per day instead of individual pushes

For most users, "No limit" works well when rules are properly configured with conditions. If you're getting too many notifications, consider adjusting your rules rather than limiting the delivery.

Best Practices

  • Be selective with push: Not every Aura needs push notifications. Reserve them for time-sensitive or important messages.
  • Use Quiet Hours: Protect your sleep and personal time. Your morning briefing can wait until your quiet hours end.
  • Tune your rules: If you're getting too many notifications, the issue is usually in the rules, not the notification settings. Add conditions to reduce firing frequency.
  • Test on your actual device: Notification behavior can vary between browsers and devices. Test to make sure you receive them as expected.
  • Keep the app updated: If you're using a PWA, occasionally open it in your browser to ensure the service worker stays active.
Warning
Notification overload defeats the purpose of proactive assistance. If you're dismissing notifications without reading them, you have too many. Quality over quantity.

Troubleshooting

Not receiving any notifications

  • Check that push notifications are enabled in Aura settings
  • Verify browser/device permissions for Aura
  • Make sure your device isn't in Do Not Disturb mode
  • On mobile, ensure the app is added to your Home Screen (iOS requirement)
  • Try sending a test notification from Settings → Notifications

Notifications appear late or not at all

  • On Android, battery optimization can delay notifications. Go to Settings → Apps → Aura → Battery → Don't optimize
  • On iOS, make sure Background App Refresh is enabled
  • Poor network connectivity can delay push delivery

Notifications work in browser but not PWA

  • Remove the PWA from your Home Screen and re-add it
  • Clear site data and re-enable notifications
  • Make sure you're using the latest version of your browser

Getting too many notifications

  • Review your rules - are they firing too frequently?
  • Add time-based conditions (e.g., only on weekdays, only between certain hours)
  • Consider using in-app only for less urgent Auras
  • Set up Quiet Hours for protected time periods
Note
Push notification delivery relies on third-party services (Apple Push Notification Service, Firebase Cloud Messaging). Occasional delays are normal. If notifications consistently fail, contact [email protected].
